Orchestre Poly-Rythmo - Unreleased Distortion

August 29th, 2005
Its 9-am, I´m in front of the Studio Satel Buildings in Cotonou waiting for Wassi and Rafiou Adisa, sons of Seidou Adisa, founder of the Legendary Albarika Store music Label. I've just paid 120.000CFA, which is the fee for renting the studio for a whole day. I didn't really know what to expect but the guys told me not to worry...."you will be satisfied !!"

They finally arrived with an hour delay, each one carrying a huge bag (the ones that are used to transport rice) full of master tapes. We had few "Fizzy Pamplemouse" and then started transferring the reels onto DAT, with a backing on CD as well. We listened to about 100 to 120 Tracks on that day. Some songs were of no interest, so we quickly skipped those, others were amazing and were directly recorded - I ended up with about 20 songs, half of which will be released in the near future. Most of the tunes were by one of my favorite band, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. One song in particular, Se Ba Do, composed by Amoussou William (a traditional singer) and performed by Poly-Rythmo, did get everyone in the Studio Grooving. That track is pure Sato, a traditional rhythm from Benin and probably one of the heaviest beats in Africa.

One 1/4 inch reel tape from 1973 contained 4 tracks that were completely distorted and were eventually re-recorded few month later in Lagos by Albarika and released on 45´s as ASB 97 & ASB 98 - AS stands for Albarika Store, the B (second) was added as there was already a label named African Songs (Lagos) which had the prefix AS.

ve had those Songs for a while now and didn´t really know what to do with them, too badly recorded to be released and too good to be forgotten, so I am glad my friends "forced" me to start this blog.

Enjoy unreleased material and...........the Distortion. (S)

Hey Samy,

great start with your blog - am always amazed at the stuff you dig up

One question - 2 rice bags = 20 songs? I hope the stuff that was not of interest to reissue does get preserved in some way - maybe some sort of deal with the African Music Archive or a library - it seems like it would be a shame if they were discarded

Hi Zim, thanks for the comment. Well the reels were nicely packed back into their cases. I remember that the Adisa Brothers didn´t want to take them back to Porto Novo, maybe because it was just too heavy, but I guess the main reason was that the studio gave them a CD of all the stuff we recorded that day and so they had the feeling they didn´t need the Tapes anymore.

Most of the tracks that I didnt record had already been released by Guenter Gretz or Miles Cleret, other tapes were damaged and some songs were extremely boring.

the last time I went to SATEL in December 2006, the reels were still laying there, 16 months after that session.

Hi Samy, iknow that your new blogspot will live up to the scrutiny of your wonderful sleeve notes and the hours wev,e both had talking MUZAK!
After looking at this i can,nt wait for the next installment , may be you should start a magazine and let the world know there was great records around before some dickhead titled anything Afro or latino under the "world music"heading.
For me there's no one better to champion Afro-latin urban groove than your good self, wicked blog and keep that kerb crawling up for the good groove.

I like the distortion! Gives the songs a strange sort of edge, the guitar on the second track is wonderful, kind of garage/psych freak out style. One hell of a band. great blog, please keep it up.

Yow! My ears are burning from Ahouli Vou Yelli ... but Gnon a Gnon Wa seems to have gone missing. I'm a newcomer to your blog & would love to hear that too, if there's any chance you can repost. Looking forward to hearing the new AA vol. 3 when I can find or order a copy - the first two have been great favorites. Thanks - keep it up!

I've been a long standing fan of orchestre poly-rythmo's two UK released CDs, and i was really pleased to see the 'lost tapes' track Ahouli Vou Yelli, but, like the last poster, i can't get Gnon A gnon wa to download (or the charles rodriguez) any chance you could put it up again, or make it available to download somewhere else. Is there more to come from the 'lost tapes'? I see their first album is supposed to be on the way, and i heard that you may be putting out a compilation also. What's happening with those?

I've been sending links all over the place to that "Ahouli Vou Yelli" track - it absolutely tears my face off every time. Would it be possible to fix up the links for "Gnon a gnon wa" and the Charles Rodriguez tune?

Thanks so much,
Peter (Melbourne, Australia).

Can I use part of the information from this post right above if I give a backlink back to your website?

Thanks,
